What a wrong answer really tells you — and why the level isn't enough
Picture a Grade 3 classroom in a government school. Forty children, one teacher, one lesson. By the time children reach Grade 3, a large share — close to 69% when measured, by recent measures — are below grade level. But that number, stark as it is, hides the harder truth. The children aren't all behind in the same way, or by the same amount. In a single room you might find four genuinely different levels of readiness sitting side by side.
And there is one lesson, pitched at one level. Whoever it's aimed at, it's wrong for most of the room. The children, it's 'too hard for', quietly stop following. The children it's 'too easy for' quietly switch off. Almost nobody is being taught where they actually are.
This is the problem that Teaching at the Right Level — TaRL — sets out to solve. It's where AML begins. And it's where AML then takes one more step.
What a wrong answer is actually telling you
Here are three answers from real classrooms. Each is wrong. Each is wrong in a completely different way.
A child is asked to add 2 + 63 and writes 83. It's tempting to read that as careless. It isn't. She's added the 2 to the 6 — she's lined the number up by the wrong columns. Her arithmetic is fine; her sense of 'place value' isn't there yet.
Another child does 47 + 58 and writes 95. Look closely and you'll see this child understands regrouping — the columns are right, the tens are handled. She simply lost the 'carry-over' number somewhere in the middle. She knew what to do and dropped a step doing it.
A third attempts 52 - 38 and writes 26. This one is the most revealing, because the child is being perfectly logical. In each column she's taken the smaller digit from the bigger one: 8 - 2, then 5 - 3. She's following a rule. It's just the wrong rule.
Three children, three “wrong” answers, three entirely different things going on — and three entirely different things needed next. A single lesson pitched at one level cannot give three different responses. And marking all three simply “incorrect” and moving on throws away one genuinely useful thing each mistake contains: a precise clue about what that child needs.
From the right level to the right step
TaRL was a real breakthrough. The insight was simple and powerful: stop teaching to the grade printed on the timetable, and start teaching to where the child actually is — group children by what they can do, not by how old they are. Studies of this approach across India found meaningful learning gains. Meeting children at their level works.
AML takes that idea and sharpens it, because in mathematics “level” is still a blunt instrument. Knowing a child is “roughly at a Grade 2 level in subtraction” is useful, but it doesn't tell a teacher what to actually do on Monday morning. Subtraction is not one skill. It's a chain of them.
So AML teaches at the right step — the step, not just the level. Instead of “this child struggles with subtraction,” the diagnosis becomes “this child can borrow perfectly well, but can't yet borrow across a zero.” That's a single, specific micro-step. And that step — not the whole topic — is what gets practised.
The difference is bigger than it sounds. Re-teaching an entire topic to a child who's missing one step is slow, and it's quietly demoralising: the child already knows most of what's being re-explained, and sitting through it again tells her, wrongly, that she's bad at all of it. Fixing the one broken step is faster — and it feels completely different to the child. It feels like being understood.
What it looks like for one child
Consider a child we'll call Karthik. He kept getting a particular kind of sum wrong — adding a number to itself, doubling — tangled up in a way that suggested a real misunderstanding rather than a slip.
The response wasn’t to hand him harder problems, and it wasn’t to re-teach addition from the beginning. It was to meet him exactly where the break was and walk him up from there, one step at a time. First, counting objects — the idea made concrete. Then a short video showing how to add the same number using objects. Then another using fingers. Then a third explaining, to see if the idea had landed. Then a run of quick number-choice questions to build a little fluency: 4 ball problem, on his own — 64 + 34 — solved without help.
Some ideas, revisited one step at a time, until the step held. No leaps. No re-teaching what he already knew. Just the missing piece, supplied where it was missing.
The shift, for a teacher
For a teacher, all of this adds up to a quiet but enormous change in the question they’re asking.
The old question was “which of my children are behind?” A question with a depressing and not very actionable answer. The new question is “what is each child doing, and what single step do they need next?” And in a class of forty children at four different levels, that shift is the whole game. It turns a lesson that can only ever be right for a few, into practice that can be right for each. And it turns every wrong answer from a small failure, into the most useful thing in the room — a clear, specific signal of exactly what to teach next.
That’s teaching at the right step. Not at the grade. Not even just at the level. At the exact place where a particular child is stuck — which is the only place teaching has ever really worked.
